Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) are infections that are passed from one person to another during sexual activity. They can be passed through vaginal, oral or anal sex.

There are a number of Sexually Transmitted Infections including:

  • Chlamydia

  • Gonorrhea

  • Herpes
  • HPV, Genital Warts
  • Syphilis
  • Trichomonas
  • Hepatitis
  • HIV
  • Some symptoms of these infections include:

  • Vaginal Discharge
  • Penile Discharge
  • Burning or pain with urination
  • Frequent Urination
  • Bumps
  • Sores/blisters
  • Swollen or tender testicles
  • Abdominal Pain
  • Fever/Chills
  • Flu like Symptoms
  • Rash
  • Itching

  • Having a STI does not necessarily mean that you will have symptoms. Some STIs are asymptomatic, meaning they have no symptoms.

You should have a medical evaluation to rule out an STI if:

  • You are sexually active and age 19 and under
  • Notice any of the above signs or symptoms
  • Have had sex/contact with someone who has or had an STI
  • Have had a previous STI
  • Have had a new partner in the past 3 months
  • Engage in risky sexual behavior

  • PPWI offers STI testing and treatment. Testing can be done through urine, blood and swab culture. If an STI is not treated you may become very sick and STIs can cause damage to your reproductive organs. Early intervention is extremely important to keep you healthy.

RAPID, SAME DAY HIV TESTING, now available:

Rapid, same day HIV testing is a new service that is being offered at our health centers as part of routine STI screening. This test takes only about 12 minutes. You receive your results the same day as your appointment, without the anxiety of having to wait for a phone call.

The test only involves a small, quick prick to the finger; no large needles are used. Counseling is available from health center staff if you have questions or concerns about HIV prevention.

For more specific information on STIs go to the CDC website and click on health topics A-Z, or contact a Planned Parenthood Health Center near you (link below) or call 1-800-230-PLAN.
