| | Having a STI does not necessarily mean that you will have symptoms. Some STIs are asymptomatic, meaning they have no symptoms.
You should have a medical evaluation to rule out an STI if
- You are sexually active and age 19 and under
- Notice any of the above signs or symptoms
- Have had sex/contact with someone who has or had an STI
- Have had a previous STI
- Have had a new partner in the past 3 months
- Engage in risky sexual behavior
PPWI offers STI testing and treatment. Testing can be done through urine, blood and swab culture. If an STI is not treated you may become very sick and STIs can cause damage to your reproductive organs. Early intervention is extremely important to keep you healthy. You may feel embarrassed about having an STI, and it may be hard for you to come into the health center. Planned Parenthood offers confidential and caring services by clinicians and staff trained in testing and treatment of STIs.
For more specific information on STIs go to the CDC website and click on health topics A-Z, or contact a Planned Parenthood Health Center near you (link below) or call 1-800-230-plan. |
